A WORD
FROM THE ASSOCIATE PASTOR
Theology Matters
The mission of John Knox Presbyterian Church’s Christian
Education ministries is to encourage and support the spiritual
formation of everyone who works and worships here. Why? Because
we want everyone to know, love, and serve the Lord all their
lives. The Apostle Paul expresses the focus of the Education
Ministry of John Knox Presbyterian Church in one of his many
letters to the young Christian churches he served: " …So
everywhere we go, we tell everyone about Christ. We warn them
and teach them with the wisdom God has given us, for we want to
present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ.”
(Colossians 1:28--NLT)
Maturity in Christ is our desire for every person who is part of
John Knox Presbyterian Church. Christian education is the
constant work of the whole church as each Christian lives in
relation to God through Jesus Christ. Our educational ministry
involves meaningful activities that include the use of a variety
of teaching and learning methods. Everyone will have a chance to
grow spiritually through worship, instruction, and fellowship so
that they may experience the reality of God’s love in their
lives.
- Our children and young people use a lectionary-based
curriculum in their Sunday school classes. The lessons they
learn there are reinforced in worship.
- In the adult Sunday school class I teach, we study one book of
the Bible each year and do that verse-by-verse,
chapter-by-chapter. We are currently studying Matthew’s account
of the Gospel.
- Another adult Sunday school class studies life’s transitions
but does so in the light of scripture’s claims.
LOGOS Program
We also have a LOGOS program on Wednesdays that creates
opportunities for our children and youth to become faithful and
effective Christians by studying, worshipping, playing, and
eating together. LOGOS is a congregationally based program of
Christian education and nurture that brings our children and
youth into contact with mature Christian adults. Those adults
serve as teachers, role models, and mentors for our children and
young people. There is even a LOGOS class for adults that Pastor
Jeff and I team-teach. If you would like to learn more about
LOGOS, click here (www.logos-system.org).
In addition, our mid-high and senior high youth make a mission
trip to Tennessee each summer and serve the people of the
Cumberland Mountains through the Mt. T.O.P. program. If you
would like to learn more about Mt. T.O.P., click here (www.mountain-top.org).
LOGOS and Mt. T.O.P. are key parts of our Christian education
program and reinforce our efforts to develop the faith and
Christian identity of our children and young people. Finally,
our mid-high and senior high youth enjoy each other’s company by
meeting each week in JKPC Youth Fellowship.
Cultivating faith and creating Christian identity in our church
family is the focus of our educational ministries at JKPC. I
hope that you will join us in that ongoing work to which God
constantly calls us. It won’t be the same without you!
