When is worship and Sunday
School?
John Knox has two worship services on Sunday morning 8:45
in the chapel, and 11:00 in the sanctuary. Sunday School for all
ages runs from 9:45 to 10:30.
What is unique about us Presbyterians
and what do we believe?
We Presbyterians are unique in two primary ways: 1) adherence to
a pattern of Christian thought known as Reformed theology, and
2) the practice of a form of church government that stresses the
active, representative leadership of both pastors and elders
(elected lay people who serve on the Session, the governing
board of the church). Incidently, the form of government of the
United States of America is founded on the Presbyterian model,
which means there would be no United States of America, as we
know it, without us Presbyterians!
Some basic principles of Presbyterian and Reformed theology are:
- The Sovereignty of God
God is the supreme authority throughout the universe and in
control of all that there is
- The Centrality of Jesus Christ
Presbyterians share with all Christians the belief that
Jesus Christ is central to our lives, our worship, and our
service. We believe Jesus Christ is God Incarnate: 100%
human and 100% divine, a mystery. We believe that God in
Christ came to live among us, and die for us, that all might
come to know the grace of God and the gift of salvation
through faith in Him.
- The Authority of Scripture
the Bible is, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the
Word of God. Presbyterians are not literalists or
fundamentalists, but do understand the Bible to be the
authoritative source of faith and practice for all of life.
It is not the words on the page that are authoritative, but
it is the Spirit of God that speaks through these words that
make them the Word.
- Justification by Grace through Faith
our salvation (justification) through Jesus Christ is
God's generous gift (grace) to us and not the result of our
own accomplishments. For by grace you have been saved
through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the
gift of God, not the result of works, so that no one may
boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
- The Priesthood of All Believers
Presbyterians believe it is everyone's responsibility
(not just pastors) to share the Good News of God's grace in
Jesus Christ.
- We are Saved to Serve
Presbyterians believe the purpose of salvation is to
serve God by serving others. Salvation is not understood as
a thing, or a commodity, or as fire insurance, but as God's
gracious election for the purpose of service. Christian
service includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Worship, Sharing the Good News (evangelism), Mission,
Christian Education, Love of Neighbor and Enemy, Prayer and
Meditation, Social and Political Awareness and Activity.
We Presbyterians state, in our Book of Order, that there are
six Great Ends (purposes) of the Church: the proclamation of the
Gospel for the salvation of humankind; the shelter, nurture, and
spiritual fellowship of the children of god; the maintenance of
divine worship; the preservation of the truth; the promotion of
social righteousness, and the exhibition of the Kingdom of
Heaven to the world.
What is worship like at John Knox
Presbyterian Church?
At a time when many churches divide their congregations by
distinguishing between contemporary and traditional styles of
worship, we at John Knox Presbyterian Church make no such
distinction. We pride ourselves on maintaining our unity as we
combine a variety of styles that enhance worship and glorify
God. We believe all worship should be contemporary all worship
should speak to 21st century Christians in ways that are
meaningful. And, we believe, all worship should be traditional
well grounded in the traditions of the historic Christian
church. After all, we're not the first people to be Christian!
We rely on a received faith that has been passed down through
the ages. We have a healthy respect for the past, but we are not
locked into old ways of doing things, including worship! Our
worship at John Knox Presbyterian Church is a faithfully healthy
mix of new and old. Our worship is an experiential event where
both hearts and minds are spoken to and challenged. We sing both
contemporary praise songs and traditional hymns every Sunday. We
use a variety of instrumentation. We use technology (screen and
projector) in faithful, non-gimmicky ways. We regularly utilize
the gifts and talents of children and youth, as well as adults.
We laugh and cry, hope and dream, as our worship leads us to
share our common bond in Jesus Christ.
What do you have to offer children and
youth?
John Knox Presbyterian Church loves Christian Education! We
offer Sunday School Classes from womb to tomb! Children in
preschool through youth in 12th grade have a class just for
them. Adults have a choice of at least two different classes.
Our Associate Pastor, Rev. Steve Frazier, is our resident master
teacher and teaches adult Bible Study on Sunday morning and
Wednesday evening. We also offer a full Wednesday evening
all-ages program called LOGOS
Additionally, we have a superb youth group for mid-highs and
senior-highs, that includes regular weekly times of fun and
fellowship, as well as an annual summer mission trip to Mt. TOP
(click
here for more info).
What do Presbyterians believe
about non-members participating in the Lord's Supper?
John Knox Presbyterian Church celebrates an Open Table. The
Communion table is called The Lord's Table because we believe it
is Jesus who is our host at the Lord's Supper. It is The Lord's
Table, not a Presbyterian table, or a John Knox table. All
persons who profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are welcome
at the Lord's Table. The Lord's Supper is celebrated on the
first Sunday of each month.
What do I do if I'm interested in
becoming a member?
Membership at John Knox Presbyterian Church may be established
in one of three ways:
- Transfer of Membership - We will write to the church
where you are currently a member and request a transfer.
- Reaffirmation of Faith - A public profession of faith in
Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
- Profession of Faith and Baptism - A profession of faith
in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior accompanied by Baptism
(if you have never been baptized).
New member classes are offered several times a year in
conjunction with membership and serve as an important part of
becoming an educated member of the church.
Do I have to be baptized to join the
church?
Yes. Baptism is the way we enter the Church. If you have never
been baptized then you will be joyously baptized when you join
the church. However, Presbyterians do not re-baptize. If you
have been already been baptized, you are already a member of the
Church Universal. We value and respect all Christian baptisms,
for There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to
the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and
in all. (Ephesians 4:4-6)
How many members does John Knox
Presbyterian Church have?
John Knox Presbyterian Church is a congregation of over 400
active members.
Do I have to give money to be a
member?
No, you don't have to. However, as you grow in your faith and
come to a greater sense of gratitude to God for all that you
have and all that you are, you will want to give. To profess
Jesus Christ as Lord is to submit yourself to His Lordship in
the whole of life. Yes, Jesus has something to say about how we
spend our money. Our money is not ours alone. It is a symbol of
our labor and it is one way we are called to give back a portion
of what the Lord has blessed us with. We are each called to give
as we are able and to give out of a sense of gratitude. A tithe,
10% of one's income, is the Biblical starting point and serves
as a faithful goal for many Christians. Remember, in the end,
there are only three kinds of giving:
1) Grudge Giving says, I have to.
2) Duty Giving says, I ought to.
3) Thanksgiving says, I want to.
How may I talk with one of the pastors?
It's easy. Call the church office (918-742-5528) on weekdays
between 8:30 and 4:30 to schedule a time to meet with Dr. London
or Rev. Frazier.
