Mississippi

October 2-9, 2005 eight John Knoxers traveled to Mississippi to re-roof Gavins Chapel PC (USA) in Bayshores, Ms. In September, Hurricane Katrina had devastated the church roof. While working we were housed by the church family at First - Trinity Presbyterian Church in Laurel, Ms.
We as workers were fully supported by our JK family. The supplies we delivered, tools we used and prayers lifted for our safety, as some of us were at heights we were not fully comfortable with.
At the end of the week we celebrated in worship at Gavin Chapel and First Church, then returned to Tulsa. We are thankful for the opportunity to represent our church and community. As a family of faith, we have responded to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Personal journal notes:

Looking out from the rooftop, in the cool of the morning, knowing it would soon be very hot and humid. You can see a pasture, dotted with cows grazing and next the piney woods that often cover this part of the South.

Drinking Gatorade (GREEN) for the first time in 40 years! It tasted GOOD! (on a hot rooftop)

Being in a new place- up on the roof working instead of watching from below. The simplicity of doing a job, without worrying about the phone calls for materials or any decisions that brought us to that roof. Knowing there is a job for each of us.

Picking up tool after tool, with JK family names written on the side, knowing you are there with us.

The beauty of First – Trinity (big steeple city church) compared to Gavins Chapel. First has cork floors in a magnificent gothic sanctuary. It is a stone church with a slate roof with charming side gardens. The color of the stained glass is rich against the stone. I’ll bet it’s cool on the hottest of days. Gavins Chapel has a sandy parking lot, under a stand of tall pines. It’s a one room chapel, built in ~1975, brick veneer, with a kitchen, bathrooms and a sliding wall dividing one room into a Sunday school class. The worship at Gavins Chapel Sun morning was vibrant! The piano was grossly out of tune, but robustly played by a blind pianist. EVERYONE in the Chapel sang with great energy, on key or not.

Meeting Martha and Warren. Martha is the Clerk of Session at Gavins. Meeting their grandgirl , dressed in her Sunday best at church. Martha drives the school bus past the Chapel everyday- “she blowed’ ya” Warren says the next day (honked at us).
